Battle of Rivers Bridge

Today we attended the reenactment of the Battle of Rivers Bridge.

It was a beautiful day and the ladies were enjoying the sunny weather.

A small cabin from the early 19th century is on site.

The gardens beside the cabin.

These ladies were preparing breakfast just outside the cabin.

As we enjoyed the morning we decided to take a peek inside the historic cabin.

I sat a spell before we went inside.

Come inside with us and check out this little landmark.

A window to the past.

Of course, being a battle site you enter at your own risk.

Inside, letters to loved ones wait to be written...

a cozy bed on which to sleep...

and a wood stove to keep the place warm.

After touring the cabin we strolled past the Methodist meeting house,

and followed the sign to the infamous...

Jenny's General Store.

Dried flowers from her garden.

Come inside with us!

It's everything we heard it would be with shelves of her famous baked goods,

and seeds from her garden
(she hand packaged the seeds with stationary:).

Hubby reflects on all of the wonderful merchandise.

Candles light the small store.

Scales await produce and grain.

The merchants of this lovely establishment.

We quickly discovered that we were kindred spirits.

All of that shopping made us hungry so we headed to our favorite tent for lunch!

Fry bread loaded with taco fixins-yummm!!!

But the reason for the event is the battle.
Cannoneers await the battle call.

Soldiers look out over the battlefield and...

prepare to fight.

Fancy meeting Beth here!
We chatted while the battle raged on.
But who's that behind us?

The guys are chatting about the battle too!

Looks kinda like an old fashioned Superbowl gathering!
Or should I say Super-battle?

After all the excitment I rested a bit,

while Beth went back to tending the store.

Hubby and I left the reenactment and drove a short way to the actual Rivers Bridge battle site which is part of a state park.
We strolled down this path.

Hubby looks out over the scene of the historic battle.

At the end of the path is the river where the bridge once stood.

It was a beautiful place making it difficult to believe that men fought to the death here more than a hundred years ago.

We'd better be heading home.
Thanks for joining us for the Battle of Rivers Bridge!

Sunday Wisdom

"Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation."

Artist Extraordinaire!

We have a favorite local artist, Mac Rogers, who has a gift for capturing the beauty of Beaufort on canvas.
He is currently the featured artist at our local art association.
The above painting is of 'Secession House' here in town.
The gentlemen pictured are the individuals who met at the house on December 20, 1860 just before they headed for Charleston to sign the secession papers.

The above painting is of the 'Planter' gunship on the morning it was commendeered by Robert Smalls during the civil war.
He escaped to Union territory with the ship and then joined the Union in the fight against the Confederacy.

This painting is the marsh overlooking the Beaufort skyline.

A blue heron on Polowana Island at sunrise.

Sunset at Lands End.
Needless to say Mac has a gift for capturing the beauty of the Lowcountry.

Beautiful Beaufort

As part of Beaufort's tricentennial celebration I thought I would share some of the amazing things that make Beaufort one of the most beautiful places in the world.
The architecture...
the sunsets...
the flowers...
the moonlight...
the churches...
waterfront park...
the history...
downtown...
the graveyards...
and the natural beauty.
What can I say, Beaufort is beautiful!
