Hair Receivers

Hair receivers were an important part of the Victorian dresser set.
Just like modern women, Victorian ladies spent a great deal of time and effort on their hair.

For more on these little gems and their purpose visit:
A collection of vintage hair combs is also included in the aforementioned post:).
Have a happy hair day!

Painted Porcelains

One of the popular pastimes of Victorian ladies was porcelain painting. Blanks from Europe were imported to be decorated in an array of flora, birds, cherubs, or whatever the artist chose to paint. Despite the notable talent of American ladies, their work was denied entry into the 1901 World's Fair in Paris as they were looked upon as mere amateurs.

I have been collecting these one-of-a-kind treasures for several years now. To learn more about American painted porcelains and their history read American Painted Porcelain, by Dorothy Kamm.
To get a bird's eye view of Victorian life in the Lowcountry of South Carolina read Truer Words, a historical fictional novel set in the Lowcountry during the Victorian era.

Battle of Gambles Hotel

This past weekend was the Battle of Gambles Hotel at the Columns.
It was a beautiful day for the event as flowers bloomed forth in vibrant hues against a Carolina blue sky.
An atmosphere of peacefulness and serenity encompassed the plantation.
Our finest attire was donned for the event.
(this is another new dress that I finished at 11:00 Friday night:).
 Hubby looked rather dapper too.
Dear friend Lynn and I sporting our newest creations.
After a stroll in the gardens we decided to tour the 1850s mansion.
The porches beckened one to times gone by.
Following the tour we headed for the battlefield to view the battle.
Shots rang out and cannons fired as onlookers watched reenactors bring the past to life.
Of course, the day was filled with fun too!
We have deterimined that orange Crush is the official drink for lots of giggles!
(For some reason we get very silly after drinking this:).
Granted things looked a bit odd over at the 'regular' food venders.
Hmmm, I don't remember Shrek being around in the 19th century.
We, of course, eat at the period correct food venders.
What's the matter? You don't want any fry bread from this guy?
Why ever not?
Oops, what seems to be the problem gents?
How embarrassing!
Their vests are made from the same fabric!
The gent on the left quickly confirmed his shock at seeing the same fabric being that he bought his from a blockade runner thinking surely no one else would have the same thing.
That is, until he found out my hubby is the blockade runner!
(he really does portray a blockade runner by the name of John Wilkins).
Despite the awkward moment all had a good chuckle and were friends in the end:).
And yet another amusing encounter.
A Chik-Fil-A cup in the hands of an antebellum lady?
After a day filled with beauty, history, and few good laughs it all ends up with friendship...
and love:).
Thanks for attending the reenactment with us!
I hope you had a nice time:).

Kramer Chronicles-My Busy Mom!

Hi, it's me Kramer.
Hopefully you haven't forgotten me being that my mom has been so busy that she has neglected to post my latest adventures!
Her busyness has forced me to engage in desperate measures in an effort to gain her attention.

She has been sewing dresses for reenactments so I tried laying on the pattern.
That didn't work.

So I tried eating the pattern!
That didn't work either.
(I did get her attention once I hacked it up forcing her to stop long enough to clean it up but then she was back at the sewing machine).

Next I tried laying on the fabric.
That didn't work either.

If all of that sewing wasn't bad enough then she had to cook Thanksgiving dinner!
Still she ignored me, humph.
So I licked the bowl-then she noticed me!

Next was decorating for Christmas.
I tried acting like a decoration but she didn't notice.

I even tried wrapping my toy around her slipper.
But alas, she stayed busy.

If the sewing, cooking, and decorating wasn't bad enough, working on her book was the most time consuming!
Here is the cover of her soon to be released novel.

I give up!
I'll just lounge here until she notices me.
I know she has missed you all and she will visit as soon as she can.
In the meantime you can wait here with me until she has a little extra time to visit.
I know she loves you guys (and me too).
Purrs and meows,
Kramer
